Flower Porn: Shortcake Does Dahlias!

So they told me I couldn't have peonies (unless, of course, I wanted them imported from South America for $1000 a case), and I was sad.  Emotionally, I was a kicking, screaming three year-old with sticky fingers and a tear-streaked face. After threatening to hold my breath until I turned blue, I gave up and gave in to the inevitability of a peony-free wedding.

And then I had my first face-to-face meeting with my floral designer - and what she suggested was pure brilliance.

Dahlias.

I would have never, ever  considered these beauties, because for the longest time I was under the misguided impression that all dahlias were brown bedraggled creatures, like the forlorn specimens in a neighbour's yard.

Luckily for me, dahlias ac-tually come in many beautiful shades of red, orange, yellow, pink, and white.  Considering that three of my wedding colours just happened to be yellow, pink, and white, it was a blessing indeed.

Now, my darling readers, because everyone needs a little floral porn in their lives, I'm going to introduce you to my new favourite flower and star of our wedding, the dahlia!

Wow.  Not only do they come in huge - hey-I-can-use-you-as-a-dinner-plate! sizes (like my beloved peonies), they're also fluffy and feminine, and for the OCD Monica in me, they're delightfully ordered and symmetrical. It's the little things that count. :)

Stay tuned to see where this new floral vision took the Shortcake wedding, I promise it's good. :D

Do you have  a signature flower in your wedding?

I love dahlias! We're using them too. They are my substitute for hydrangeas.

I'm actually looking at peonies and dahlias for my bouquet! And spring is the season for most flowers so I'm pretty stoked about it. Pinks and yellow and whites will be in my bouquet as well I think...I was going to go with red for awhile but I think it's too harsh for my spring wedding. I'm more and more liking the soft colours, tiffany blue, a soft yellow, white, light pink, and gold as an accent. I'm going to go do some preliminary talking with my florist next week! Wish me luck!
